It's really weird for a spaceship to arrive back at base on fire. I suppose you could assume exterior parts were hot enough they were waiting for oxygen, but that still assumes combustible parts exist toward the exterior.
Or you could assume the inside was on fire and they decided to fly home before putting it out. Which is a very questionable decision that I think you'd need Jim logic to justify.
It does however suit rolling a 1 on your post-encounter resolutions table.
